Individual Counseling to Students
Individual counseling is a private interaction between a counselor and a student in which they work together on a problem or topic of concern. A one-on-one meeting with a counselor allows the student to freely explore ideas, feelings, and behaviors.

Regarding ConfidentialityUnfortunatley, School Counselors do not have the resources to do long term counseling. we will be glad to work with families to find outside long term support. we can meet with students who are experiencing extreem distress over various issues who need support in the learning environment.
About Confidentiality - When students meet with the school counselor, the things discussed will be held confidential unless the child gives permission for the counselor to share the information with someone else. However, there are some serious situations in which confidentiality will need to be broken in order to get further assistance for the child. These situations include: If it is discovered from the student or someone else that someone is hurting him/her If it is discovered from the student or someone else that the student may hurt someone else If it is discovered from the student or someone else that the student may harm him/herself If a judge tells me I must reveal information in a court of law |
Group Counseling
Small Group Counseling involves a counselor working with two or more students over a period of time. Group members have an opportunity to learn from one another as they share ideas, give and receive feedback, and increase their awareness. Small groups are designed to address a variety of issues including: academic support, attendance, family changes, bullying, grief, self-esteem, making smart choices and anger management. Please contact Mr. D or Ms. Grady if you would like to refer your child for a counseling small group.
Guidance Lessons
Counselors develop and present guidance units to classes to address developmental issues or areas of concern. Students at Swansboro Middle may attend guidance lessons by personal, teacher, or parent request. Some common topics may include our monthly character traits: responsibility, respect, self-discipline, compassion, courage, honesty, integrity, career exploration and personal safety.
Working with Parents and Teachers
We attend conferences at the request of a student, parent/guardian or a teacher. We are available to meet with parents to discuss concerns regarding their children. Most conferences are held during the school day with the core teachers present.
Working with Community Resources
Counselors provide information to parents regarding assistance programs available in the Swansboro area, including agencies for counseling outside of school. Additionally, we assist in coordinating the Holiday Assistance program where local families, agencies and area churches provide food, clothing and gifts to SBMS families - especially during the Christmas season.
Onslow County Schools' Character Education
In support of the Onslow County Schools' and Swansboro Middle School's Mission and Goals, the Board of Education has selected desirable character traits to be emphasized throughout the school year. Students learn about and practice the traits that characterize responsible citizens who make positive choices.
